"Aaaaah..." Mantis groaned upon opening his eyes. "I was right...", he grumbled to himself acknowledging the aches throughout his body, although they were noticeably less severe than he was expecting after such an impact. "Still doesn't mean I didn't call it."
Mustering the strength, or perhaps it was the will, to get up, he observed his surroundings. Trees. Trees. A couple more trees to the left. Oh, and there's something hiding behind that tree that looks like-
"Yep, another tree... " he finished his thought vocally, following it up with a sigh. "So I'm going to go out on a limb here and say I'm in a forest."
His thoughts were interrupted by a high-pitched laughter breaking free from its restraints. In an instant, his gaze rose to the branches of a tree to his left. On one towards the top appeared to be a small lion. Or not? I'm not quite su-
"What are you? A lion?." Mantis called upwards to it jokingly, clearly not expecting an answer. The laugh is a little strange, I'll be honest, but there's no way that lions can talk-
"Go out on a limb!" the creature howled in response, its laughter showing no sign of slowing. It looked like he was even about to-
"And now you're falling!" Traversing the ground in and instant, Mantis lunged forward and deftly caught whatever it was to spare it from becoming as intimate with the ground as he himself did not too long ago.
"Stop doing unexpected things..." he sighed once more, albeit with a substantial more amount of fatigue. Wherever he was, whatever this guy was, it was all really wearing him out. Won't even give him time to think.
"Oh... Oh, man... That limb joke was a killer. So, uh... what are you?"
Rather than be shocked at the verbal communication, not to mention lack of a language barrier, Mantis felt somewhat robbed. "What are you?" wasn't exactly the first question on his mind, but it was up there. Yet it was asked to him first.
"Human. I'm a human. Mantis Reynolds, and you?" he returned the question tiredly.
Hopping out of Mantis's arms, the creature landed squarely on its own four feet and raised its voice significantly. As if in tandem with the volume, tiny sparks of static electricity began to jolt off of its fur. Perhaps if it used dryer sheets-
"I'm Leormon, a Digital Monster! I've lived here all of my life, but I've never seen a human before. It's nice to meetcha!"
A Digital Monster? What in the- wait, a Digimon? Like that card game that kids in middle school play?! Hell, his sister plays with the games. If he weren't so lucid, Mantis would swear he hit his head much harder than he recalled.
"Of course this happens to me..."
"But I have heard of humans! Some Digimon say that with the help of a human, there's nothing in the Digital World that can stop you! Which is coincidentally why I'm here. You see-"
Mantis coughed loudly as he returned to his feet, interrupting this Leormon as he talked on. This was all a little too far fetched to believe, and yet presented with the circumstances, he really had no other choice.
"I'm going to stop you right there. I'm not all that great at video games. So if you want my help to defeat the Final Boss or something, well you're pretty much screwed. I'm beyond useless when it comes to-"
This time it was Mantis that was interrupted as an earsplitting roar boomed through the area. Something was close. Something big. Something that sounded pretty pissed off.
"Um, partner?" Leormon asked, "We might want to start hiding and now. Even with our powers combined-"
The roar came once more, sounding much closer this time.
"This is not going to end well..."

"I have a question."
Leormon swiftly responded by bringing one of its paws to its lips, the international shush sign. Inter... worldional? Yeah, the interworldional shush sign. The somewhat angry, possibly furious, more than likely completely pissed off echoes of danger still seemed to be closing in on them. Even after all of that running they did off screen.
Mantis shrugged, asking it to himself inwardly instead. 'So, uh... what if this cave is it's home?' As the two of them had not established a telepathic link, it was one that would go unanswered, yet still worried him. Whatever it was seemed to be closing in, although not nearly as fast as before. He hated this place.
"I hate this place...", he mumbled. See?
"Oh, come on, it's not all that bad." Leormon whispered. "It's just a little damp, but cozy."
"Totally not what I meant." Mantis replied, stepping over to the what he was from this point on going to assume was a lion Digimon and peering out the cave from over his head. Trees were rustling, and the wind was not blowing. Not a good sign. Then came question two.
"You're a Digimon. I'm not all that familiar with the games, but you can evolve or something, right? Get bigger? Stronger?" he asked, a tinge of hope in his voice.
"I sure can, Mantis Reynolds." Leormon answered with a grin.
"Prove it. Go beat whatever that-" Mantis's words were cut short as the trees parted to reveal some sort of large, dangerous looking bipedal lion with a sword. Definitely not something Mantis thought that he could beat. "Now would be a good time!"
"Leomon!" Leormon's face lit up with a mixture of joy and relief. Apparently the two knew each other. Heck, they may even be related. Father and son? Mantis felt a wave of relief wash over him, but still couldn't help but feel on edge. After all, acquaintances or not, there is STILL a bipedal sword-wielding lion outside the cave that clearly chased the two of them all the way here.
"LEORMON!!"
He sounded angry.
"I did NOT say you could leave the dojo!" Leomon growled before becoming uncomfortably silent. His large emerald eyes landed upon Mantis. Here it was. Moment of truth. Live or die.
"A human? Here?" he asked cautiously.
"Not by choice, I assure you..." Mantis replied hesitantly, suddenly feeling more tired than he's ever been. His stomach growled. Make that more tired and hungry. Too tired to even feel afraid anymore...
"This is Mantis Reynolds! We're the partners that are going to save the Digital World, Leomon!" And yet Leormon seemed to have somehow been energized. Literally. That static electricity was back. It just plain wasn't fair.
"... I see." Leomon answered, his voice filled with a sense of pondering, as if trying to grasp how he felt about the situation. As his eyes closed, a moment of complete silence went by, interrupted only at the end by Mantis's stomach once more. "Hm... It is decided, then. Mantis Reynolds, come with Leormon and me back to my dojo. We will eat, rest, and tomorrow I will take you into the city. Jijimon will know how to handle this situation."
For a lion that just rampaged through the forest howling and screaming like a banshee, this Leomon was a stand up guy.
"You're a real stand up guy, Leomon... Lead the way."
Mantis was so thrilled he didn't even care how likely it was he could eat the food in a place called the Digital World.
